New Laptop Issues
So, you've just got your new laptop home and it's not doing what it's supposed to. A new laptop needs a little extra care and attention to get going. Look at the setup procedure below and make sure you have not missed anything.
1: The box.
When removing the laptop from its box take care to check everything is there. The laptop normally comes wrapped in a protective plastic cover and will not have the battery connected. Check the box for the following essential items.

Once you have unwrapped the laptop it's time to plug it in. Connect the power lead to the power adaptor and connect it to the mains. Once done you can now plug the power into the laptop. The layout of laptops varies from model to model so you may need have a good look to see where it goes. Take a look at the following image to give you a better idea
Now that you have the laptop connected it is recommended that you leave it to fully charge. This normally takes around an hour and is well worth doing. Powering on a laptop for the first time without charging it can reduce the life of the battery. Of course, if you purchased it from us, we will have prepared the machine for instant use.
3: Power up
With the laptop fully charged you are now ready to power it on. Open the screen so it is at a comfortable viewing angle and press the power button. Again, the power button varies in location but is normally located above the keyboard in the middle.
Once powered on, the laptop will begin to POST (Power On Self Test) This is normally the first screen you see and only stays on for a few seconds. Once the POST is complete you will see the Windows XP/VISTA load screen. If any of these have failed to happen check the following;
1:Is the system restarting or freezing? If so, this normally indicates a hardware issue. Please contact our support number on:01759 301616
2:The laptop is not powering up? Make sure the power adaptor is connected and turned on at the mains. This is indicated by a light with a battery icon. If the laptop still fails to power on there is a possible power issue. PLEASE CONTACT NCSL SUPPORT
4: Windows
Once in windows you can really get to grips with your new computer. Take a good look round and get a feel for the Operating System. If this is your first time using windows you may consider buying a Getting Started With Windows book which can help you along the way. Above all, don't be scared of your new computer, it is there to help you.
